Sometimes you are about to find the unicorn. A discontinued bottle that will never see the light of day again. My luck came just recently. After asking all the right questions and talking with the bartenders, they said that they had something in the back they wanted me to try. They had about 5 drinks left of their 13 year Van Winkle Family Reserve rye. It is now discontinued, so if you want to try this, the sooner the better.
This rye is as complex as I have had. If I were to imagine, coming from a bourbon mind, what a rye vs a rye bourbon would taste like, this would be in. You first get hit by the smooth spiciness and tobacco. Then, a wave of cinnamon and hints of anise hit your pallet. There is a bit of oak in each layer of flavor. You will find a bit of maple, but not the same sweetness that you will find in a rye bourbon.
Overall for a rye this is an 8/10. I like it more than Whistle Pig(at 10 years) as it is a bit light on flavor compared to this Van Winkle. Best of luck finding a taste of it if you like rye.
