Jefferson’s Presidential Select
Jefferson makes some of the finest bourbons in the world. Very Old is one of my normal staple drinks. Recently, they have started making some more premium bourbons in 18, 21, 25 and now 30 year old offerings.
To date, this is the oldest bourbon produced. As well, this is a 30 year bourbon for my 30th birthday. So, I needed to have this and ended up driving an hour away to find one. There was about 75 cases of this produced worldwide, so this is an extremely limited release and trial.
Flavor-wise, I was scared. When bourbons get to be about this age, the oak seems to take over as most of the other flavors are very subtle in bourbon. I will have to say though, I was pleasantly surprised.
The nose – started with the cherry and orange aspects and moved into smooth oak and vanilla
Taste – This had a very viscous mouth feel, which I love. After you finish drinking, it lingers on your palate for another 30 seconds. There is a good balance of sweet and spice to balance the heavy oak that this would have. You can definitely get a hint of citrus and a cherry pie flavor. There is an odd bitterness as the flavors subside, which I am not sure if I like or dislike.
Overall 8.5/10 – It is a very good bourbon and the cherry/citrus hints make this interesting
Value 6/10 – I would personally not purchase it again at about $300/bottle retail. But, for $200 it would definitely be worth it.
